The baseball team swept a doubleheader from John Jay in a conference match up played Tuesday afternoon at Beach Channel H.S. in Queens, New York.
Baruch won 8-6 and 17-9 to improve to 9-10 overall and 7-5 in the CUNYAC.
In the first game, senior Paul Alfano (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) pitched the complete game victory with six strikeouts. He also contributed with his bat getting two hits and one RBI.
Cesar Chaves (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) had two hits and scored two runs, while Charles Dantone (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) had an RBI double and scored two runs.
The Bearcats led the whole game and started quickly with a 5-1 lead in the third inning.
In the nightcap, Mike Etkin (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) pitched 6.1 innings of solid relief for the win, notching eight strikeouts, two walks, and allowing only one earned run.
The pitching performance is similar to a game last season, when Etkin pitched just as long of a relief appearance to defeat Cazenovia for the first win of the season.
Max Loehrke (New York, NY/Brooklyn Tech) had three hits, while Alfano, Chaves, and Ramon Grullon (Brooklyn, NY/Murry Bergtraum) each recorded two hits.
Baruch took the lead for good by scoring four runs in the second inning for an 8-6 lead.
They never looked back and Etkin shut the door down the rest of the way.
The sweep keeps Baruch in the fight for a top four finish in the conference standings. This is important, since the top four qualify for the CUNYAC Tournament to be played on May 7-8 in Binghamton, New York.
